Sustainability in modern farming part 1
Apr 29, 2012
Since early Spring, Farmers Weekly has been visiting Adam Henson's Gloucestershire farm, exploring the theme of sustainability in modern farming. The first programme in the series asks "What does sustainable farming actually mean?" In this series of articles we're trying to explore just what that familiar buzzword means when it gets mud on its boots. So far, we've looked at what true environmental sustainability means, looked critically at many modern arable farming practices, and explored how diversification has made businesses more sustainable, too.
Traditional vs modern agriculture.
Mar 27, 2012
Traditional vs. modern agriculture. In developing countries almost all traditional work flows are done by machinery. 1860: 60% of the people in the USA worked in agriculture. Today (2009) it is less than 3%. In the future farming machinery will be automatically controlled guided by satellites. Crops produced by such methods will be very competitive on the world market and will increase the pressure on developing countries. The problem today is that only a few people benefit from the use of technology and money. But the majority of people in developed and developing countries are forced to work a great deal to avoid unemployment and make a living. Increasing economic inequality causes tension in society, resulting in crime, violence and wars. Extrapolating this trend into the future, it is evident that we need a systematic change so that society as a whole will profit from increased automation. See The Venus Project for more information.

more at "Up-to-date methods of hog raising, plus suggestions on breeding, feeding, farrowing and management." Public domain film from the Library of Congress Prelinger Archive, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and equalization. http ...Pigs can be farmed in free range, being allowed to wander around a village, kept in fields, or tethered in a simple house. In developed countries, farming has moved away from traditional pig farming and pigs are now typically intensively farmed. Today, hog operations are significantly larger than in the past, with most large-scale farms housing 5000 or more pigs in climate-controlled buildings. With 100 million hogs slaughtered each year, these efficiencies deliver affordable meat for consumers and larger profits for producers. Individual farm management focuses on housing facilities, feeding and ventilation systems, temperature and environmental controls and the economic viability of their operations. Just as producers have to determine profit margins and types of facilities and equipment for their farm, they must also find the practices that best fit their specific situation. Some procedures and treatments are known to stress the animals and producers should consider the animals' welfare, health and management in correspondence with accepted husbandry skills ...

Ross McKenzie provides comments on what affect modern farming has had on the soil. Thousands of small scale farmers in India commit duicide, because they can no longer solve their debt problems. Two decades ago they took up modern farming and with the help of government subsidies they started growing commercial crops. In the beginning harvests were good, but as time went on, the financial support of the government decreased more and more. The farmers were forced to obtain even bigger loans to pay for the expensive new seeds, fertilizer, and pesticides. Repeated failed harvests now force them into despair. Millions of poor farmers however have turned their backs on modern agriculture in order to bring new life to their traditional ways of farming. With a lot of success! The surprisingly good results are due to a combination of working together intensively, and the masterly combining of traditional seeds. Sammamma Begari, a small women farmer from the South-Indian village of Bidakanne proudly states: We have our own crops. They provide for us and our children. We certainly dont want to loose them again. Her friend Chandramma Molegeri added: Our own agriculture is wonderful. I cant think of ...
